Stretching across the southern Peruvian desert sands, the Nazca Lines are one of the most mysterious archaeological wonders on Earth. More than 2000 years old, these enormous ground drawings only fully visible from the air have puzzled historians, scientists, and conspiracy theorists alike for decades. Their years of construction range from 200 BCE to 600 CE. The lines were created by the Nazca Civilization.
The Nazca Lines are geoglyphs, huge designs etched into the ground by removing dark surface stones to reveal lighter soil underneath. The area is one of the driest on Earth which enabled the lines to be well preserved. Discovered in 1924 only when pilots noticed them from the air. Although there is mention of the lines in a 16th century document. Best seen from the sky. 140 Geoglyphs spreading 100's of square miles. Some lines go for miles and are as straight as a ruler. Over 800 lines stretching for 1000s of miles. Some would have been destroyed. These surviving examples may represent a small proportion of the original shapes, how much of the original story have we already lost. We are in fact still finding new ones using AI. The geoglyphs feature animals, plants, humanoid figures and geometric shapes, some as big as a football field. The purpose and meaning remains a mystery. Why build on such a scale that they could only be viewed in full from the sky at least 500 feet up.
The BIG question is - Why were they made?
Were they some kind of prayer to the gods for rain?
Were they sophisticated maps for underground water management?
Are they a map for survival written in the sands?
Do they serve as some kind of astronomical calendar?
Do they represent star maps or celestial events or used to track seasons or solstices.
Were they ancient pathways that were later adapted?
Were they cemeteries for the dead?
Ceremonial walkways were priest would walk down.
Where they simply expressions of art.
Some theory's popularised by Erich von Daniken go on to suggest landing lines for aliens often by those that have never visited the lines. He suggests the famous “astronaut” figure appeared to resemble a helmeted being. Were they runways that were later adapted in the hope of encouraging the return of pre visited aliens. However the lines are too fragile for any craft. Why would advanced aliens who would have traversed the vast distances of space need a dirt runway to land.
The Nazca people more advanced than originally thought. They were producing some of the best ceramics and textiles in the world at the time. There is a theory of the Nazca people developing hot air balloons to view the terrain from above. Why draw a hummingbird, Whale or monkey. None of these would have been native to the area so how did they see these animals.
